Brookline VILLAGE

Built in 1893, this half-duplex Victorian-era residence immediately captured our clients’ hearts with its bright living space on three levels, and its period details. Late 20th century renovations had diluted some of the historic charm, so the project goal was to bring back a sense of history, while creating a comfortable environment for a young family of five. We also wanted to embrace the patina and beautiful imperfection that comes from over a century worth of living, and not renovate the soul out of this home. Millwork details were added, including hidden paneled foyer closets, plus new crown moulding, ceiling sticking & trim for the first floor, and new windows. Douglas fir floors that had been painted multiple times over the century were sanded and finished to a natural tone, highlighting the beauty of old nail holes and imperfections. Through the use of hand-made materials such as Zellige and BDDW tile, and hand-applied finishes such as the Tadelakt walls in the kitchen, we added texture to a soft and neutral color palette. Modern lighting offsets the traditional Victorian envelope of the home, while new and antique furnishings combine to create a collected look.
